Professor Geoffrey Hinton, a University Professor at the University of Toronto, shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics.with Princeton University's John J. Hopfield for discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks.
Widely regarded as the “godfather of AI,” Professor Hinton has went through difficult times during the AI winter when fundings for AI research were limited. University of Toronto (to myself is the best university) hired and supported Hinton since 1987.
When this news of Hinton winning the Nobel Prize reached me from a close friend, the UofT motto echoed in my head - Velut arbor ævo (as a tree through ages). Hinton's story is so encouraging and inspiring. Everyone, throughout life, would experience up and down, going through good or bad times. But we need to be strong and keep growing, as a tree rooted in the ground facing the wind and storms.
Recently, I moved to my new office at HKU and brought my UofT diploma, the most important item, with me. I carefully examined the Academic Seal and read the Greek - ΜΗ ΔΗΓΟΙ ΣΤΕΦΑΝΟΥΣΑ (i.e., Let none lead astray). In other words, it tells us do not be swayed by those in power or authority; instead, we should honor the truth and wisdom. I was deeply moved by the image of the angel taking off the crown and pointing to the earth. It truly reflects the education philosophy - everyone should be educated with the mindset of honoring the truth, and the truth only.
