The future of AI education

AI is transforming our daily life, from drafting an email, preparing a report, to painting a picture and generating ideas for buying birthday gifts. Yes, no doubt, the next generation will grow up with immersed AI-powered services. But should AI be a university major, similar as the classical mechanical engineering, electrical engineering? If yes, how should we design the curriculum to meet the needs of education for the students, especially in the info-explosion and rapid tech-evolving era.

To address this question, we might consider how to distinguish AI from computer science. If distinct characteristics are lacking, choosing AI as a major name may not be prudent. This topic has sparked extensive debate at recent annual conferences held by the China Mechanical Engineering Society. As one expert noted, we should remember our original aspirations while continuing to explore technological advancements. A good example is that to combine the neural networks with domain knowledge in specific disciplines.
